“Pokemon Snap”, the classic Nintendo 64 game went out of its way and created a whole new experience for all the Pokemon fans and players out there. Ever since its first release, many have been anticipating the release of a remake or a sequel, it has only increased so much more after it was re-released in 2017 for the Wii U. During a presentation on June 17th, 2020, The Pokemon Company finally announced a follow-up called “New Pokemon Snap”. In this article, we will discuss the release date, the developer, the improvements, and everything you need to know about the “New Pokemon Snap”.
Developers Of The New Pokemon Snap
Let’s take a look at who will be developing the upcoming game and maybe this will give us some insight into what to expect with the release as well! The original “Pokemon Snap” was not created by the main series developer which is Game Freak. Instead, Kirby developer Hal Laboratories and a more obscure developer Pax Softnica worked on the game for the Nintendo 64. However, it seems as though neither of these teams is involved with the release and development of the game, this we know because of the credits of the presentation that revealed the game.
In the credits, it has been confirmed that “New Pokemon Snap” is “Developed by Bandai Namco Studios Inc.” It might seem a little strange that the new Pokemon is not developed in-house but it is notable that Nintendo and Bandai Namco have a long history and have worked together on many titles in the past like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
The “New Pokemon Snap” is based on the previous “Pokemon Snap” game which was released for the Nintendo 64 console in 199, is what the press release revealed the game said. The game is to take Trainers on adventures across unknown islands overflowing with sights of nature like jungles and beaches where they can research various Pokemon in their natural habitat. This sounds like for the new game, we can expect brand new environments and new places.
“They will take photos to make their very own in-game Pokemon Photodex, all while discovering new, never-before-seen Pokemon expressions and behaviors,” says the press release. It seems as though we can expect it to be a culmination of the new and the old with features of both combining to form an interesting new game!
What New Pokemon Can We Expect In “New Pokemon Snap”
As of now, there has not yet been any official list of what new Pokemon will be featured in “New Pokemon Snap” that has been released. However, from the reveal trailer, many new and impressive Pokemon can be seen. Unlike the first “Pokemon Snap” game, this new title will not be limited to the first generation Pokemon Red and Blue games and all eight mainline Pokemon generations are fair game.
As for those that can be caught in the game, the list is as such- Buffolant, Vivillon, Swanna, Pelliper, Wailord, Crabbrawler, Pikachu, Zangoose, Driftblim, Lapras, Primarina, Sharpedo, Emolga, Dodrio, Grookey, Pichu, Scorbunny, Squirtle, Pyukumuku, Mantyke, Mantine, Blastoise, Magikarp, Pidgeot, Torterra, Bidoof, Wurmple, Hoothoot, and Bellossom. It becomes quite evident with this list that the new Pokemon will have Pokemon from all generations.
As of right now, it is unfortunate news but we do not have any official release date for the New Pokemon Snap. On June 17th, 2020, The Pokemon Company released an official word and a teaser on the New Pokemon Snap but there was no date mention for when it would be released. The only thing that the video let on to its eager viewers was “Coming Soon” which still leaves us with no specific date. Tsunekazu Ishihara, The CEO of The Pokemon Company said, “We are hard at work developing new Pokemon Snap for Nintendo Switch. We look forward to sharing details with you soon.”
This statement gives us hope for a possible 2020 release date! But, at the very least, be sure to hear more in the coming couple of months, that’s a given. However, it is possible that the current situation with the global pandemic might delay the release to a 2021 date. Stay tuned and don’t lose heart as we will be sure to update you soon!
