Niki Caro’s Mulan is finally about to release internationally on Disney+ on September 4, 2020. The movie has already premiered in Hollywood earlier this year on March 9, 2020 however things didn’t go as planned because of the COVID-19 pandemic that has been taking the whole world into a swirl since a few months now. The unforeseen situation had pushed back the release of a number of projects in the industry because of the shutting down of the production as well as the theatres.
Although the situation is a lot better now, it still isn’t enough to normalize everything and after multiple delays, it is finally decided that the movie will be available to watch in the theatres for those who don’t have the premium version of Disney+ feature available in their country, provided that the theatres have been given the permission to be reopened. For the rest, as said earlier, you can watch the movie on the streaming platform if you own the subscription rights to it. The movie has a runtime of 115 minutes in an approximation and has been made on a budget of 200 million dollars. It is the most expensive project a female director has ever worked on.
It has also been announced that there will be a sequel to Mulan, which is already under development, which will be produced by Chris Bender, Jake Weiner, and Jason T. Reed again. As for this movie, the screenplay has been done by Rick Jaffa, Lauren Hynek, Amanda Silver, and Elizabeth Martin with Walt Disney Pictures as the production house.
The movie has been named after it’s the titular character, Mulan, that will be played by Liu Yifei. The movie also casts Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Bori Khan, Yoson An as Chen Honghui, Gong Li as Xian Lang, Jet Li as The Emperor of China, Tzi Ma as Hua Zhou, Rosalind Chao as Hua Li, Ron Yuan as Sergeant Qiang, Xana Tang as Hua Xiu, Jimmy Wong as Ling, Doua Moua as Chien-Po, Chen Tang as Yao, Nelson Lee as The Chancellor, Cheng Pei-Pei as The Matchmaker, Chum Ehelepola as Ramtish, Utkarsh Ambudkar as Sketch, and Arka Das as Red Fez in supporting roles. The character of young Mulan has been played by Crystal Rao.
What to Expect from Mulan 2020?
The movie is about Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of a noble warrior, who steps forward to replace her ailing father when the Emperor of China declares a new rule of at least one person serving in the Imperial Army to safeguard it from Northern invaders. Disguised as a man, with the name Hua Jun, the young maiden has to face a lot of challenges at every stage, by harnessing her inner-strength and understanding her real potential.
The movie is a wonderful journey of a girl who breaks the tradition and earns the respect that she deserves, making her father proud. The film is based on the American action drama inspired by the Chinese folklore titled, ‘The Ballad of Mulan’ and also serves as Disney’s 1998 animated film’s adapted live-action version, that bore the same name. Mulan has remained one of the most anticipated movies of the year and you can watch the trailer of the movie here for a better picture of the cast and the storyline.
