The novel series has been written by Koshi Tachibana. It has been illustrated by Tsunako. The story belongs to the romantic comedy and science fiction genre. The novel series has been published by Fujimi Shobo. It was published in the English language by the Yen Press for the English readers. The story was adapted in a lot of versions. It was adapted in the form of manga, anime, film, and video games.
The novel series was adapted in the form of anime television series. It is directed by Keitaro Motonaga. The series is produced by AIC Plus+. A stream was done on Niconico with low quality but a week prior to the official TV release. The first season was released on 31st March 2013, and the TV premiere happened on 6th April 2013. The first season ended on 22nd June 2013 on television. The series was aired on Tokyo MX. After the end of the first season, a second season was announced supposedly to air in April 2014. A third season also aired from 11th January 2019 to 29th March 2019. An anime adaptation of the spin-off novel has also been announced.

A film adaptation was announced after the second season of the anime television series. The film was an animated theatrical release. The film was titled Date A Live Movie: Mayuri Judgement. It premiered on 22nd August 2015. The original writer, Koshi Tachibana, was brought on board for original story production.
The story explores a fictional happening called spatial quakes. These spatial quakes happen when beings or spirits from different dimensions manifest themselves in the real world. One such character is a mysterious girl whom a high school student Shido Itsuka noticed at ground zero. To seal the powers of these spirits, Shido must make them fall in love with him and kiss him. Shido continues sealing the powers of these spirits.
